Overview

50th Anniversary Video

The University of Ottawa’s Division of Orthopaedic Surgery has 39 surgeons, 32 of whom are involved with adult orthopaedics and six of whom are dedicated to paediatric orthopaedics at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). The faculty members of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery perform more than 10,000 operations annually. Our surgeons strive to foster a climate of creative learning and innovative research so as to continually enhance the quality of care that we deliver. The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery is dedicated to being a model for excellence in musculoskeletal care and education as well as a leader in clinical outcomes and basic science research from childhood through adulthood.

We will research and establish best evidence-based practices in providing comprehensive treatment of musculoskeletal conditions from childhood through adulthood.

Our History

1958

First Head of Orthopaedics

Dr Jacques Robichon becomes Head of the University Division of Orthopaedics.

1966

Recognition by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada

With the cooperation of Dr. Hew Kellam at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, the integrated orthopaedic program is recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.

1966

First Graduate of the Integrated Program

Dr. Jean Pierre Germain becomes the first graduate of the Integrated program.

1966

Scoliosis Research Society

Gordon Armstrong is a Founding Member of the Scoliosis Research Society.

1971

Recognition from the Faculty of Medicine

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery of the Department of Surgery is recognized by the Faculty of Medicine, with Dean Lussier.

1973

University Appointment Division of Orthopaedic Surgery

Dr. Raymond Paiement from Montfort Hospital gets a University Appointment.

1974

CHEO Opening

Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario is open with Dr. William Mclntyre as head of the pediatric orthopaedic division (pictured second from the left).

1978

Inter-University Program

Inter-University program for Orthopaedic Surgery between the University of West Indies and University of Ottawa.

1990

Chair of the Division

Dr. Hans K. Uhthoff becomes Chair of the Division of Orthopaedics University of Ottawa (Dr. Uhthoff on the left with Dr. Robichon).

1991

25th Anniversary

25th Anniversary of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery

1991

New Chair of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery

Dr. Merv Letts becomes the new Chair of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery.

1992

Gold Medal of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association

Dr Gordon Armstrong receives the Gold Medal of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association for his work in the development of spinal surgery in China.

1992

Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory

The Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory is established the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

1997

New Chair of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery

Dr. Alan Giachino becomes the new Chair of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery.

2001

Member of the Order of Canada

Gordon W.D. Armstrong, C.M., M.D., F.R.C.S.(C). awarded with Member of the Order of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. He has improved the quality of life of people with spinal injuries. This renowned surgeon made significant contributions in clinical assessment and the design of implants for patients with spinal deformity through his involvement with the National Research Council of Canada. A former Head of Orthopaedics at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, he lectured and demonstrated new surgical techniques in Canada and abroad, and was instrumental in the development of the China Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Beijing. He also served as President of the Scoliosis Research Society and of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.

2003

New Chair of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery

Dr. Geoffrey Dervin is named the new Chair of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery.

2004

President of the AANA

Dr. Don Johnson is named the new President of the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

2006

The Wenzhou Orthopaedic Exchange

Dr Alan Giachino establishes the Wenzhou Orthopaedic exchange.

2007

Hans K. Uhthoff Graduate Fund

Hans K. Uhthoff Graduate Fund raises over 1 million dollars at the University of Ottawa.

2009

Member of the Order of Canada Award

A. Alan Giachino, C.M., M.D., F.R.C.S.C., awarded with the Member of the Order of Canada award in Ottawa, Ontario. A surgeon at the Ottawa Hospital and associate professor at the University of Ottawa, Alan Giachino is an inspiration and role model for his students and colleagues. In addition to running a busy medical practice, he has brought the high standards of Canadian orthopaedic surgery to a number of developing countries. As a volunteer with World Orthopaedic Concern and Health Volunteers Overseas, he has shared his expertise and provided mentorship and networking opportunities to many medical practitioners in Asia and Africa. His continued dedication to surgical training has enhanced Canada’s reputation as a caring and compassionate nation.

Dr. Paul E. Beaulé is named the new Chair of Division Of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Research Chair in Regenerative Orthopaedic Surgery

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery donates $1 million for the research chair in regenerative orthopaedic surgery.

Over the past fifty years, the University of Ottawa Orthopedic Program has trained over 500 residents and fellows across six continents covering over 30 countries.
